Between 13th and 18th June, 1916, 8th Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 72 Brigade, 24th Division were in the front line trenches along part of the Messines Ridge in Belgium. Between 12.20 and 1.45am on 17th June the enemy released gas against the front held by 72 Brigade and 73 Brigade but did not follow this up with an infantry attack. Nevertheless the gas itself caused a number of casualties among the troops in the front line, including John Matteri who was killed in action.
